General information

As of June 1, 2019, new regulations apply to the use and operation of drones in Canada. If anyone wishes to use or ascend a drone in Canada, the following regulations must be followed:

  1. Registration and marking:
    1. Drones weighing between 250 grams to 25 kilograms (0.55 lbs to 55 lbs) must be registered and marked.
    2. Micro drones weighing less than 250 grams are generally allowed, provided they are operated with reasonable care.
    3. A special permit is required for drones with a takeoff weight of more than 25 kilograms.
    4. Pilot requirements:
    5. Pilots must be at least 14 years old.
    6. They must be a Canadian citizen or resident.
  2. Drone Pilot Certificate:
    1. Anyone wishing to take a drone up in Canadian regions must hold a Canadian pilot certificate or a Canadian drone pilot license.
    2. A short online exam is required prior to certification.
    3. Advanced Pilots:
    4. Advanced drone pilots who, for example, wish to fly in controlled airspace or operate in close proximity to spectators, must take a practical exam (flight review) in addition to the online theoretical exam.

These regulations were introduced to ensure the safe use of drones in Canada and to minimize potential risks. It is important that all drone owners and pilots adhere to these regulations and familiarize themselves with the relevant requirements.

Drone Pilot Certificate

To obtain the drone pilot certificate in Canada, please visit following link. There are two main categories of certificates: Basic' and Advanced'. Basic Operations include operations in uncontrolled airspace, where you are allowed to stay more than 30 meters away from bystanders and drones are not allowed to fly over crowds.

If these conditions are not met, for example if you fly a drone closer than 30 meters horizontally to people, these flights are considered "Advanced Operations". The same applies when you enter controlled airspace with your drone. The "Basic" certificate is therefore often referred to as a "small drone driver's license." To obtain this certificate, you must successfully complete an online exam, currently 35 questions (multiple choice), within 90 minutes. The Small Basic Exam (available here) is open to individuals 14 years of age or older. After successfully completing the exam, you can download and print your certificate.

Advanced Operations' also requires a separate exam, the Small Advanced Exam. You must be at least 16 years old to take this advanced drone exam. "Advanced" pilots must also successfully pass a practical flight test. You must be able to show your certificates at all times while flying. Note that the certificate currently has a validity period of two years. After this period, it may be necessary to take the online exam again to extend the validity of the certificate.[1]
